LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee and Emory University men's basketball teams both advanced to the championship game of the W&L Tournament with wins on Friday evening at the Warner Center. The Generals knocked off King's Point, 75-53, in the opener, while Emory defeated Hood, 62-59, in the nightcap.
In the opening game, W&L jumped out to a 22-4 lead in the opening 6:29 of the game and never looked back in claiming the 22-point victory. The Generals shot 54.8 percent in the first half en route to a 46-23 lead at the break and led by as many as 30 points late in the second stanza.
W&L (5-3) was paced by junior forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), who totaled 14 points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward Kirk Jones (Maple Glenn, Pa./Germantown Academy) tallied a season-best 10 points, five assists and four rebounds, while senior guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood) and sophomore guard Chris McHugh (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) chipped in nine points each.
King's Point (5-3) was led by senior guard Brian Kelly (Belle Harbour, N.Y./Archbishop Malloy), who registered 18 points and five rebounds.
In the nightcap, Emory (6-3) ended the first half on a 14-5 run to assume a 32-27 lead at the break and never trailed again in posting the win. The Eagles stretched their lead to as many as nine points (42-33) with 14:38 left in the game, but the Blazers (7-3) used a 12-3 run to knot the game at 45-45 with 9:39 left. The game was tied on two other occasions in the final nine minutes, but a layup by EU senior guard Shawn Bailey (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) with 49 seconds remaining gave the Eagles the lead for good at 59-57. Hood had one shot to send the game into overtime, but freshman guard Nick Scott's (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) half-court shot at the buzzer hit off the back rim.
Senior guard Adrian Sosa (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Cooper City) posted 20 points, five rebounds and five assists to lead Emory. Senior forward Eric Barvin (Houston, Texas/AWTY International) added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Hood was led by junior center Jesse Gutekunst's (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) 21 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Sean Robine (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) tallied 13 points and seven boards.
King's Point and Hood will meet in Saturday's consolation game at 6:00 pm, while W&L and Emory will square off in the championship game at 8:00 pm.
