W&L Women’s Basketball Falls To Va Wesleyan, 66-54

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Nicole Thurston tallied 14 points and 13 rebounds to help lead Virginia Wesleyan to a 66-54 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals (3-3, 1-2) jumped out to an 11-1 lead just 3:29 into the game, but the Marlins (4-2, 2-1) responded with a 10-0 run to knot the game at 11-11 with 13:37 left in the first half. The game then went back-and-forth for several minutes until VWC closed the first stanza with an 11-3 run for a 33-25 lead at the break.

W&L battled back to tie the game at 46-46 on a three-point play by sophomore forward Kara Nadeau (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) with 8:22 left in the game. However, the Marlins posted an 8-0 run over the next 2:02 to assume a 54-46 lead with 6:20 remaining and never trailed again.

The Generals were paced by senior center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./Orme School), who tallied 16 points and eight rebounds. Nadeau added 13 points and seven boards.

Thurston's effort was supported by 12 points from Andrea Ushinski and 11 points from Tonia Jones.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Bridgewater for a 7:00 pm contest.
