W&L Downs Meredith In Ncaa First Round, 6-0

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Sophomore forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) recorded a hat trick in leading the 24th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Meredith College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Maryville College.

With her three goals, Van Devender broke the W&L season record for points (57) and tied the W&L record for goals in a season (23).

Van Devender started the scoring in the 28th minute when she scored unassisted. The score remained 1-0 until the second half, when Van Devender scored two goals in a four-minute span for a 3-0 advantage.

W&L upped its lead to 4-0 on a goal by senior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) off an assist from senior forward Sarah Helms (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) at the 68:57 mark and extended to a 5-0 lead on a goal by junior forward Shana Oltmans (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) off a feed from sophomore midfielder Kate Corr (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) at the 74:26 mark.

Sophomore defender Marissa Van Brunt (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) capped the scoring in the final minutes as she buried a free kick from nearly 30 yards out.

Sophomore Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) and senior Emily Binns (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) both played in goal for the Generals, combining to produce W&L's 18th shutout of the season.

With the win, W&L tied the program record for victories set during the 2002 season. The Generals are now 17-1-2 overall and will face Maryville College in a second round match on Sunday at 6:00 pm.
