Volkmann's Two Scores Lead W&L Field Hockey to 2-1 Win over Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Senior forward Amy Volkmann (Norfolk, Va./Granby) scored both of the Generals' goals to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

The contest was scoreless until late in the second period when Volkmann tallied her first score of the match off an assist from sophomore forward Christina Merchant (Midlothian, Va./Collegiate) at 59:15. Volkmann would score again less than five minutes later off an assist from sophomore defender Liz Garson (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) to give the Blue and White a 2-0 lead. The Eagles' Chelsea Brown responded with a score with just 41 seconds remaining in regulation to cut the W&L lead to 2-1, but it was too late and the Generals (8-3) held on to the win.

Junior goalkeeper Tara Rubenstein (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) played the duration of the game for W&L, notching six saves. Katherine Brown made four saves for Mary Washington (8-4).

The Generals return to action on Thursday when they take on Mary Baldwin at 4:00 pm in Staunton, Va.
