DANVILLE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team competed in the first day of the Averett Invitational and won both of its matches, first defeating Greensboro 30-18, 30-26, 30-21 and then downing Averett by a score of 32-30, 25-30, 30-20, 31-29.
In the win over Greensboro, the Generals were led by junior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names), who tallied a team-high 18 digs, four blocks and four service aces. Senior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) registered 13 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) notched 14 kills. Junior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) added 25 assists.
In the win over Averett, Maurer paced W&L with 25 kills and 23 digs. Hudock contributed 16 digs, 13 kills and four service aces, while Edmonson racked up 20 digs. Freshman setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) had a team-high 33 assists.
Washington and Lee (14-4, 6-0 ODAC) returns to action on Saturday for day two of the Averett Invitational. The Generals take on Queens at 10:00 am and Meredith at 2:00 pm.
