SALEM, Va. -- Freshman forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Washington and Lee field hockey team over Roanoke, 2-1, in ODAC action on Wednesday afternoon.
The Generals (7-3, 4-0 ODAC) opened the scoring at 15:57 when sophomore forward Christina Merchant (Midlothian, Va./Collegiate) notched an unassisted tally for the only score of the first half.
Kelly Miller found the equalizer for the Maroons as they tied the game in the 41st minute of play. Neither team would break into the scoring column and entered the first overtime knotted at 1-1. However, Armstrong scored at 76:14 to end the contest and give W&L its fourth conference win.
Junior Tara Rubenstein (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) played the entire contest in goal for the Generals, picking up four saves. Lindsay Paz made 14 saves in goal for the Maroons (1-9, 0-2).
Washington and Lee returns to action Saturday when it takes on Lynchburg at 1 pm.
