BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Washington and Lee football team saw its six-game winning streak end with a 27-8 loss at Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (6-2, 2-2) jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead and held the Generals to just 148 offensive yards for the game.
BC began the scoring with 7:12 left in the first quarter as running back Winston Young capped a nine-play, 52-yard drive with a 5-yard plunge for a 7-0 lead. The Eagles extended their lead to 14-0 on a 7-yard touchdown scamper by quarterback Jeff Highfill with 11:51 remaining in the second quarter and went up 20-0 on a 5-yard touchdown run by running back Phillip Carter. The extra point was no good and the Eagles headed to the half with a 20-0 advantage.
The Generals (6-2, 4-1) climbed to within 20-6 with 10:11 left in the third quarter on an 8-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback R.J. Varner (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park) to junior wide receiver Jack Martin (Clayton, Mo./Hun School). Senior Garrett LeRose (Lebanon, N.J./Hunterdon Central) ran it in for a two-point conversion following a bad snap on the PAT attempt. The Generals' score was set up by a 63-yard hookup between Varner and Martin two plays before the touchdown.
Bridgewater put the game away with 2:34 remaining in the contest as Antonio Burt sacked Varner and forced a fumble which was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by Austin Icaza.
Washington and Lee was led offensively by Martin, who caught three passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. Varner completed 13-of-25 passes for 137 yards and one touchdown, but was intercepted twice. Carter amassed 77 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries. Defensive lineman Michael Jackson led the defense with eight tackles and a pair of sacks.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Emory & Henry for a 1:00 pm contest. A win would make the Generals the 2006 ODAC Champions.
