LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior midfielder Modou Jobarteh (Silver Spring, Md./John F. Kennedy) notched both of Lynchburg's goals as the Hornets upset the 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The game remained knotted at 0-0 until Jobarteh headed the ball into the back of the net off an assist from senior forward Matthew Lombardo (Virgina Beach, Va./Floyd Kellam) at 56:47. Jobarteh responded with his second goal just 26 seconds later when freshman midfielder Josh Reed (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) fed him the ball and he volleyed a shot past W&L's junior goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) at 57:13.
With the win, the Hornets secured the second-seed in the 2006 ODAC Tournament and improved to 11-4-2 overall and 6-1-2 in conference play. The Generals fall to 11-2-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the ODAC.
Sheedy made four saves for W&L, while junior goalkeeper Marcus Jordan (Lynchburg, Va./Germantown) turned away five shots for LC.
As the third-seed in the 2006 ODAC Tournament, Washington and Lee takes on sixth-seeded Eastern Mennonite on Saturday at Watt Field in Lexington, Va. The game time has yet to be determined.
