LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore forward Haylie Black (Newport News, Va./Menchville) registered two goals as 16th-ranked Christopher Newport upended the Washington and Lee field hockey team, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
The Captains opened the scoring in the 11th minute of play when junior forward Ashley Traylor (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) notched a goal off a feed from freshman defender Kelsey Dusch (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox). Subsequent scores by Black in the second half stretched CNU's lead to the final 3-0 margin.
With the loss, the Generals fell to 13-4 overall, while CNU improved to 10-3 overall. Christopher Newport outshot W&L, 15-3, and held a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Junior Tara Rubenstein (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) tallied seven saves in goal for W&L, while Ashley Whipple (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) made three saves in goal for the Captains.
The Generals return to action on Tuesday for their final regular-season contest of 2006 when they travel to Lynchburg, Va., to take on the Hornets at 4:00 pm.
