LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee football team won its fifth-straight game for the first time since the 1995 season, defeating Hampden-Sydney, 28-6, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Additionally, the six points allowed by the Generals' defense are the fewest scored by the Tigers during the Marty Favret era (2000-06). W&L's defense held H-SC scoreless in the first half by blocking a pair of field goal attempts and holding on downs at its 6-yardline with 11 seconds left before the break en route to a 14-0 lead at the half.
W&L (5-1, 3-0) jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 5:56 remaining in the first quarter as freshman quarterback R.J. Varner (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park) found junior wide receiver Jack Martin (Clayton, Mo./Hun School) with a 58-yard scoring strike. Sophomore running back Stuart Sitterson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) capped the first half scoring on a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 6:50 left in the half.
The Generals opened the second half with a 7-play, 52-yard drive that resulted in a 24-yard touchdown pass from Varner to Martin to up the lead to 21-0 with 11:36 left in the third quarter. Sophomore running back Tom Pacicco (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) then gave W&L a 28-0 lead when he scored on a 10-yard touchdown run with 5:19 left in the third quarter.
The Tigers (2-4, 2-2) found the end zone with 7:43 remaining in the game as sophomore tight end Connor Oliver (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) hauled in a 5-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Bobby Owens (Halifax, Va./Halifax County). The ensuing PAT was wide, producing the final margin.
Martin led the Generals with two catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Varner completed 8-of-13 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, while Pacicco rushed 19 times for 76 yards and one touchdown. Sitterson gained 47 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries before leaving with an ankle injury just prior to halftime.
The Generals' defense was paced by junior linebacker Kyle Harvey (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast), who totaled eight tackles. W&L picked off H-SC quarterbacks four times, including a pair of picks by junior safety Kyle Luby (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park).
Hampden-Sydney was led offensively by junior wide receiver Drew Smith's (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) five catches for 89 yards. Freshman quarterback Craig Warnement (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) completed 10-of-28 passes for 90 yards, but was intercepted three times. Owens completed 2-of-3 passes for 41 yards and a touchdown, but was also intercepted once. Sophomore running back Josh Simpson (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) carried eight times for 54 yards. Freshman defensive end Quintin Kelly (Goochland, Va./Goochland) led the Tigers' defense with five tackles and one sack.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Guilford College for a 1:30 pm contest.
