VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Washington and Lee placed four players in double figures but it was not enough as the Generals fell 72-69 at Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC women's basketball action on Tuesday evening.
The Marlins (8-2, 5-0) jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the game's opening minutes and carried a 32-24 lead into the halftime break. The Generals then rebounded with a 9-0 run to open the second half and take a 33-32 lead. The lead would change hands several times until the Marlins assumed the lead for good with a run that gave them a 69-61 lead with 2:43 remaining in the game.
W&L chipped away at the lead in the final minutes, thanks in part to VWC missing four straight free throws in the final minute. The Generals had one last chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but sophomore guard Emily Wolff's (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) three-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.
W&L (3-6, 2-4) was paced by junior center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./Orme School), who tallied 18 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Kristen Krouchick (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy) registered 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while senior guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) notched 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Wolff added 10 points, six rebounds and a career-high seven assists.
Virginia Wesleyan was led by sophomore forward Allison Wheeler's 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor. Junior center Nicole Thurston totaled 13 points and nine boards, while junior guard Lauren Rector chipped in with 10 points.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Hollins for a 2:00 pm contest.
