NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Junior Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./LaSalle College) won the 184-pound weight class and sophomore Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) captured the 149-pound weight class to help lead the Washington and Lee wrestling team to a third place finish out of six teams at the Apprenctice School Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va.
UNC-Pembroke took home the team title with 92 points, followed by Apprentice (77), Washington and Lee (69.5), Southern Virginia (27), University of Maryland-Baltimore County (12) and William and Mary (1.5).
Courtney, the top seed, knocked off UNCP's Rex Ely 7-2 before defeating teammate, sophomore Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), 5-0, in the championship match.
Lawrence, the top seed, defeated UMBC's Mike Hornzell 8-5 before knocking off Jeff Becker, 7-6, in the final.
Freshman John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) went 2-1 to place second in the 285-pound weight class, while sophomore David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) also went 2-1 to finish third at 133 pounds.
Additionally, freshman Rob Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends) posted a 3-1 record to place third at 141 pounds.
The Generals return to the mat on Sun., Feb. 5 at the Johns Hopkins Triangular. The meet begins at 1:00 pm.
