LEXINGTON, Va. -- Emory & Henry jumped out to a 12-0 lead and never trailed in claiming a 94-75 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (2-15, 2-10), facing E&H's pressure defense, turned the ball over on their opening seven possessions of the game before regrouping to slice the Wasps' lead to just one point (31-30) with 5:50 remaining in the first half. Emory & Henry pushed back out to a 42-38 lead at the break and the Generals remained within striking distance until a 12-4 run gave the Wasps a 13-point lead (71-58) with 9:42 to play. A later 10-0 run by E&H stretched their lead to as many as 21 points in the final six minutes of play.
Washington and Lee, which committed 36 turnovers, was led by freshman forward Kirk Jones (Maple Glenn, Pa./Germantown Academy), who tallied career-highs in points (15) and rebounds (13). Sophomore forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) posted 16 points and seven rebounds, while freshman forward Ryan Owens (Floral Park, N.Y./Chaminade) tied his career-highs in points (10) and rebounds (7).
Emory & Henry (8-9, 4-6), which hit 17-of-57 three-point attempts, was led by junior guard Korey Townsend's (South Boston, Va./Halifax County) 17 points. Sophomore guard Shavar Bland (Newport News, Va./Warwick) and freshman guard Camillo Weinz (Radford, Va./Radford) added 12 points each.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Roanoke for a 7:00 pm contest.
