ASHLAND, Va. -- Freshman guard David Carlson hit a layup with 2:32 left in overtime to give No. 17 Randolph-Macon a 65-63 lead that it wouldn't relinquish en route to a 71-67 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's basketball action on Sunday afternoon in Ashland, Va.
The Yellow Jackets (15-3, 10-1) led 59-56 with 33 seconds left in the second half, but Generals' junior guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood) hit a three-pointer with 23 seconds remaining to send the game into the extra period. In the overtime period, R-MC scored the first four points to take a 63-59 lead, but W&L tied the game at 63-63 on a layup by freshman guard Isiah Goodman (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) with 2:52 remaining, which set up Carlson's go-ahead basket.
The Generals (2-14, 2-9) held an 11-point lead (29-18) with 4:33 left in the first half, but the Yellow Jackets responded with a 12-0 run to take a 30-29 advantage at the 2:09 mark. However, W&L went into halftime with a 33-31 edge.
In the second half, W&L led by as many as six points at 43-37 at the 11:11 mark, but R-MC went on a 15-8 spurt to take 52-51 lead with 3:26 left and held the advantage until Halkitis' game-tying three-pointer.
Goodman finished with a team-high 12 points and Halkitis added 10 points. Sophomore forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) chipped in with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while freshman guard Chris McHugh (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) scored a career-high 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
The Yellow Jackets were led by junior guard Stephen Sutherland's game-high 22 points. Junior forward Phil Hawley added 15 points, five rebounds and a game-high five blocks.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Emory & Henry at 7:00 pm.
