LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore forward Troy Kaase (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) rebounded a miss by sophomore forward Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan School) and layed the ball in with 4.3 seconds remaining to give 11th-ranked Hampden-Sydney a 58-57 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's basketball action on Sunday afternoon at the Warner Center.
The Generals (2-11, 2-6) trailed just three times in the second half and led by seven points (47-40) with 9:15 remaining in the game. From there, a 9-2 Tiger run knotted the game at 49-49 with 4:41 remaining. The game would be tied on three other occasions in the final minutes and a three-pointer by Tiger junior guard Mike Edwards (Richmond, Va./Steward School) with 1:40 remaining gave H-SC a 56-55 lead. However, W&L assumed a 57-56 lead with 1:19 remaining on a pair of free throws by junior guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood) and neither team could find the bucket until Kaase's game-winner.
W&L was led by sophomore forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), who tallied 15 points and five rebounds. Junior forward Alex White (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) tied a career-high with 11 points, while Halkitis totaled 10 points and five assists.
Hampden-Sydney (12-2, 6-2) was paced by Kaase's 17 points and four rebounds. Edwards finished with 13 points, while Prehmus registered nine points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Bridgewater for a 7:00 pm contest.
