W&L Men's Basketball Downed by Lynchburg, 62-60

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore guard Kwame Safo knocked down a jumper with 1.3 seconds left to lift Lynchburg to a 62-60 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va.

The Hornets (2-13, 2-6) last lead of the game was at the 12:51 mark of the first half when they held a 13-12 advantage. The Generals (2-10, 2-5) went ahead 14-13 on a layup by sophomore forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and went into halftime with a 10-point edge at 34-24.

In the second half, W&L extended its advantage to 14 points at 40-26 with 17:50 remaining, but Lynchburg slowly chipped away at the deficit and knotted the game at 57-57 at the 4:40 mark. The Generals recaptured the lead at 60-57 with 3:37 left on a three-pointer by junior guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood).

The Hornets then tied the game at 60-60 on a free throw by senior guard Andy Albright with 42 seconds remaining. Albright then stole the ball with 15 seconds left, which set up Safo's game-winning shot.

Bienemann led the Generals with 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Halkitis finished with 12 points. Sophomore guard John Mumper (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) added 11 points and five boards.

Lynchburg was led by senior guard Matthew Sweeney's 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Albright tallied 15 points and seven rebounds.

Washington and Lee returns to the court on Sunday when it hosts No. 11 Hampden-Sydney. The game begins at 2:00 pm.
