LEXINGTON, Va. -- Three different Generals scored two goals and freshman midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) tallied a school-record tying three assists as the Washington and Lee women's soccer team shutout Bridgewater, 9-0, in ODAC women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (5-1-2, 4-0-1) got on the board at the 6:54 mark when junior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored the first of her two goals off an assist from sophomore defender Haley Bunting (Houston, Texas/St. John's). Wiltshire made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal at 10:41. The Generals upped their advantage to 3-0 when freshman forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) tallied an unassisted goal at 14:54. W&L went into halftime with a 4-0 lead after freshman forward Erica Giordano (Cranford, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) scored off an assist from Kern at 41:55.
W&L scored two more goals within the first 14:07 of the second half to push their advantage to 6-0. Senior midfielder Gina Von Sternberg (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) scored at 51:36 and Van Devender notched her second goal at 59:07. Kern assisted on both goals. Giordano scored her second goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Mary Clair Turner (Lexington, Ky./Sayre School) at 71:53 to give W&L a 7-0 lead enroute to the nine-goal victory.
W&L freshman goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) and junior netminder Emily Binns (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) each played 45 minutes, while freshman Brooke Barham (Fredericksburg, Va./Fredericksburg Christian) played all 90 minutes and stopped 12 shots for the Eagles (3-3-2, 2-3).
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday at Emory & Henry. The game begins at 1:00 pm.
