W&L Football Upended by Centre, 35-26

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Centre College football team racked up 415 yards of total offense, including 260 yards rushing, in defeating Washington and Lee, 35-26, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Colonels (4-0) opened the scoring with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter as senior linebacker Sean McCormick (Bellbrook, Ohio/Alter) blocked a W&L punt and returned it four yards for a touchdown. Centre then upped its lead to 14-0 with 3:03 remaining in the second quarter as junior wide receiver Adam Clark (Frankfort, Ky./Owen County) hauled in a 31-yard touchdown reception from sophomore quarterback Jarrod Williams (Carrollton, Ky./Carroll County).

The Generals (2-1) closed the half with a 16-yard touchdown strike from senior quarterback Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) to junior tight end Ryan Neff (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) with nine seconds left in the second quarter.

Centre bounced back with an 8-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Kevin Phelps (Leitchfield, Ky./Grayson County) with 10:15 left in the third quarter, but W&L scored two plays later to cut the score to 21-14 on a 68-yard touchdown reception by sophomore wide receiver Jack Martin (Princeton, N.J./Hun School).

Clark caught his second touchdown pass of the day, this time a 15-yarder from Phelps with 7:47 left in the third period for a 28-14 lead. However, W&L again responded quickly as freshman defensive back Stuart Sitterson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) returned the ensuing kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was wide, making the score 28-20 in favor of the Colonels.

Senior running back Joe Conley (Paris, Ky./Bourbon County) extended the CC lead to 35-20 on a 1-yard touchdown run with 14:14 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Generals drove to the Centre one yardline on the ensuing possession, but the Colonels held on downs. Following a CC punt, Tweardy found Martin with a 17-yard scoring strike with 3:18 remaining in the game to cut the W&L deficit to 35-26, but a two-point conversion failed. The Generals' attempt at an onside kick also failed and Centre ran out the clock for the victory.

Martin led the Generals' offense with 11 catches for a career-high 206 yards and two touchdowns. Tweardy completed 24-of-38 passes for a career-high 310 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, while junior wide receiver Colton Ward (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) tallied 50 yards rushing and 20 yards receiving. Sophomore cornerback Kyle Luby (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) paced the defense with 11 tackles.

Phelps led the Colonels, completing 7-of-15 passes for 113 yards and one score, and rushing for 80 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Clark snared seven passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns, and senior running back Adam Blandford (Middletown, Ohio/Lakota West) carried 11 times for 96 yards. Sophomore linebacker Matt Johnson (Ashland, Ky./Paul Blazer) led the Centre defense with 14 tackles and an interception.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Randolph-Macon for a 1:00 pm contest.
