W&L Volleyball Splits in Day One of Emory Classic

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team split a pair of matches in the opening day of the Emory University Classic on Friday evening. The Generals defeated Spring Hill College, 30-21, 30-27, 30-23, before falling to fourth-ranked Emory, 30-26, 30-28, 30-20.

In the win over Spring Hill, freshman middle blocker Laurel Stewart (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) tallied 11 kills in two games, while freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII) and senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) notched 11 and nine kills, respectively. Junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) totaled 14 digs and senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 33 assists, 12 digs and seven service aces.

In the loss to Emory, Maurer registered 11 kills, Edmonson totaled 11 digs and Gladysz notched 32 assists.

W&L (7-3) returns to action on Saturday for the final day of the tournament. The Generals play Regis at 11:30 am and LeTourneau at 2:00 pm.
