LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior Greg McClain (Middletown, Calif.) scored his second goal of the game with just 45 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give the Southern Virginia men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over Washington and Lee on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (2-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 14:58 mark on an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Josh Dodds (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar). The Knights (2-4) evened the game at 1-1 just 3:34 later when McClain scored off a pass from freshman Daniel Hyde (Vernal, Utah). The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Dodds then tallied his second goal of the game at 64:06 to give W&L a 2-1 lead. However, SVU responded to knot the game at 2-2 after freshman Dax Farnsworth (San Antonio, Texas) took a corner kick from freshman Ezra Belmont (Ontario, Calif.) and buried his shot into the back of the Generals' net, setting up McClain's game-winner.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and senior netminder Mike Stanton (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) combined to make one stop for the Generals. Freshman goalkeeper Brady Anderson (Buena Vista, Va.) made nine saves for the Knights.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it opens its ODAC schedule at Bridgewater. The game is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
