LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 25th-ranked Washington and Lee volleyball team split its matches in the second day of the 15th annual W&L Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center. The Generals fell to fifth-ranked Emory, 30-27, 30-23, 30-23, then defeated Centre College, 30-23, 28-30, 30-20, 30-23. Emory defeated Christopher Newport, 30-26, 31-29, 30-26 to claim the tournament title.
In the loss to Emory (4-1), the Generals were paced by junior outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep), who tallied 12 kills. Freshman middle blocker Laurel Stewart (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) notched eight kills and six digs, while senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) totaled 36 assists and 12 digs.
In the win over Centre, senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) led the way with 14 kills and six blocks. Senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) logged 11 kills, 12 digs and six blocks, while junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) added 21 digs. Gladysz also totaled 54 assists and 15 digs.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Thursday as it hosts Guilford for a 7:00 pm match.
