SALEM, Va. -- Junior forward Michelle Orton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) scored a team-high 20 points and pulled down a team-best seven rebounds to help lead top-seeded Randolph-Macon to an 87-73 win over eighth-seeded Washington and Lee in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Salem Civic Center.
The Generals (13-13) trailed 7-2 with 17:32 remaining in the first half, but went on a 20-9 run over the next 7:33 to assume a 22-16 advantage at the 9:59 mark. The No. 5 Yellow Jackets (24-1) retook the lead at 27-26 with 6:32 left and after W&L pulled to within one at 30-29, R-MC closed out the half on a 12-0 run to take a 42-29 lead into halftime.
R-MC opened the second half on three-pointer by sophomore guard Salem Shaffer (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) to take a 16-point lead (45-29). However, W&L went on a 17-4 spurt to pull within 49-46 at the 15:32 mark and then tied the game at 49-49 on a three-pointer by freshman forward Hayley James (Mount Sidney, Va./Fort Defiance) at 15:02. The Yellow Jackets responded with a 14-2 run to take a 63-51 lead with 11:17 left and would maintain their double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
The Generals were 27-for-69 (.391) from the field and had 44 rebounds, including 19 offensive boards. R-MC was 34-for-70 (.486) from the floor and committed just 11 turnovers.
W&L was led by freshman forward Kristen Krouchick (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy), who scored a career-high 24 points and notched four rebounds. Sophomore center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./The Orme School) tallied 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while junior guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) added 11 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. She also became just the fifth General to surpass the 1,000 point plateau and will enter her senior season with 1,003 career points. Senior guard Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) dished out a season-tying high nine assists.
Orton was aided by junior guard Megan Silva (Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage), who scored 18 points, handed out six assists, and collected a game-high five steals. Shaffer finished with 14 points, three assists and three steals.
Washington and Lee concludes the season with a 13-13 overall record and a 9-11 mark in the ODAC.
