LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman forward Kristen Krouchick (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy) connected on a three-point play with 24 seconds remaining to lift Washington and Lee past Emory & Henry, 54-53, in ODAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.
The Generals (13-12, 9-11) held a 47-36 lead with 9:37 remaining in the second half, but the Wasps (15-10, 12-8) went on a 15-2 run to take a 51-49 lead with 2:09 left. W&L tied the score at 51-51 on a pair of free throws by senior guard Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) at the 1:52 mark.
E&H retook the lead at 53-51 with 39 seconds left on a jumper by senior guard Amy Hensley (Rose Hill, Va./Thomas Walker) which set up Krouchick's game-tying layup and winning free throw. The Wasps had two chances to win the game, but one shot was blocked and the other rimmed out with two seconds remaining.
The first half saw the two teams exchange the lead nine times. The Wasps led 23-21 with 7:43 remaining in the half, but the Generals went on a 13-2 spurt to close out the stanza and head into halftime with a 34-25 advantage.
W&L was led by junior guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill), who poured in a game-high 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds and collected four steals. Krouchick finished with 10 points and four rebounds, while sophomore center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./The Orme School) had nine points, eight rebounds and a game-high four blocks. She is now second all-time at W&L with 94 career blocks.
Hensley led E&H with 13 points and five rebounds, while freshman forward Sarah Worden (High Point, N.C./Wesleyan Christian) added 10 points, six rebounds and three steals. Junior guard Brooke Barker (Rogersville, Tenn./Cherokee) hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds.
With the win, the Generals tied the school-record for victories in a season. They return to action in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Thursday. The opponent and game time is still to be determined.
