W&L Women’s Basketball Drops Nailbiter, 54-50, To EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Junior guard Stephanie Mathews scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to lift Eastern Mennonite to a 54-50 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Tuesday evening.

The Royals (14-5, 10-4) led by as many as seven points (20-13) in the opening period and claimed a 29-25 lead at the break. EMU pushed back to a 34-27 lead with 17:09 remaining in the game, but a 7-0 Generals' run over the next 1:30 knotted the game at 34-34. From there, EMU went on a 10-2 run to take a 44-36 lead with 10:30 left in the game and would not relinquish the lead. W&L closed to two points at 46-44 with 5:39 remaining, but could get no closer.

The Generals (10-10, 6-9) were led by senior guard Bethany Dannelly (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe), who scored a season-high 13 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) tallied 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals, while sophomore center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./Orme School) notched eight points and seven rebounds.

Junior forward Amanda Renalds added 10 points and five rebounds for the Royals.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Randolph-Macon Woman's College for a 2:00 pm contest.
