LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee shot just 29.5 percent from the floor and committed 26 turnovers in falling to Virginia Wesleyan, 66-55, in ODAC women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon at the Warner Center.
The Generals (1-5, 0-3) trailed by just three points (37-34) with 16:25 remaining in the game, but a 14-5 run by the Marlins over the next 6:18 gave VWC a 51-39 lead and W&L crept no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
W&L was led by senior guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill), who tallied 13 points and seven rebounds. Junior center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./Orme School) notched 12 points and 15 rebounds, while sophomore guard Emily Wolff (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) added 12 points and five boards.
Virginia Wesleyan (4-2, 3-0) was paced by sophomore forward Heather Phillips' (Hillsboro, Va./Ashburn Stone Bridge) 19 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman guard Bryttani Payton (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) scored 10 points and junior center Nicole Thurston (Ramstein, Germany/American) added eight points and 11 rebounds.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Eastern Mennonite for a 7:00 pm contest.
