MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team saw its school-record 11-game winning streak come to an end with a 2-0 loss at Montclair State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
The Generals' defense kept them in the game throughout as senior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) notched seven first-half saves. However, the Red Hawks (17-2) found the cage with just 31 seconds remaining in the first half as Jennifer Tanis scored off an assist from Jen Soss.
The score remained 1-0 until MSU's Alexandria Kelly found the cage unassisted at the 55:41 mark of the second half for a 2-0 lead. Senior Elise Gelinas (Gladwyne, Pa./Agnes Irwin) played the second half in goal for W&L, recording three saves. The Generals' defense helped thwart several other scoring opportunities for the Red Hawks as senior midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), junior defender Rebecca Hatchett (Newport news, Va./Hampton Roads), and freshman defender Liz Garson (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) combined to make six defensive saves.
Montclair State held a 19-2 advantage in shots and a 17-2 edge in penalty corners. Robyn Apicelli played all 70 minutes in goal for the Red Hawks, making two saves.
The loss ends W&L's season at 15-6 overall. The Generals, in just their sixth season as a varsity program, claimed their first ODAC Championship and first berth to the NCAA Tournament. The 15 wins also established a new school record.
