W&L Field Hockey Wins ODAC Championship with 2-1 Victory over Lynchburg

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior forward Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) scored two goals to give the top-seeded Generals a 2-1 victory over second-seeded Lynchburg in the ODAC Field Hockey Championship game on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field. This is W&L's first ODAC title in program history.

The Generals (15-5) controlled the game for most of the first half, but it was the Hornets (15-6) who jumped on the scoreboard first when senior defender Dawn McGaha (Wyoming, Del./Caesar Rodney) tallied an unassisted goal at the 20:51 mark.

Lynchburg held its 1-0 advantage for the rest of the first half, but W&L tied the game at 1-1 just 4:26 into the second stanza when Beall scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Kendall Korte (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox). Beall then scored the game-winning goal at 58:55.

The Hornets had a chance to tie the game late in the contest, but senior forward Andrea Fleming's (Milford, Del./Milford) blast was saved by Generals' senior goalkeeper Elise Gelinas (Gladwyne, Pa./Agnes Irwin).

W&L outshot the Hornets, 13-4, and held a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Senior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) played the opening 35 minutes and made two saves, while Gelinas was between the posts for the final 35 minutes and made one save to pick up her second win of the season. Junior netminder Elizabeth Foskey (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) played the entire game and stopped five shots for the Hornets.

Beall's two goals pushed her season point total to 38, which ties the school record set by Kelly Taffe '03 in 2003. She was named to the all-tournament team along with Korte, senior midfielder Kate Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends) and senior midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), who was named tournament MVP.

Washington and Lee, which extended its school record winning streak to 11 straight games, will return to action in the NCAA Division III Tournament against an opponent that is yet to be determined.
