FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Washington and Lee junior center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./The Orme School) recorded a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds, but it was the 24th-ranked Mary Washington women's basketball team which came away with a 61-53 victory on Tuesday evening in Fredericksburg, Va. It was the Eagles second win over W&L in the last three days.
Mary Washington (3-0) led 9-4 with 13:23 left in the first half, but the Generals (1-2) went on a 13-3 spurt over the next 4:01 to take a 17-12 lead. The Eagles regained the lead at 19-17 on a three-pointer by senior guard Jenn Olinger at the 7:41 mark and extended their advantage to as many as 11 points (30-19) before heading into halftime with a 30-22 edge.
W&L opened up the second half on a 13-9 run to pull to with four points (39-35) with 12:10 remaining. However, UMW slowly extended its advantage to 13 points at 56-43 with 4:40 left. The Generals crept back to within six points (59-53) on a three-pointer by sophomore forward Hayley James (Mt. Sidney, Va./Fort Defiance) with 23 seconds remaining, but they wouldn't get any closer.
Hunsinger was aided by sophomore forward Kristen Krouchick's (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy) 10 points and seven boards. James finished with career-highs of 10 rebounds and three assists to go with her six points.
The Eagles were led by freshman guard Sarah Flanagan's 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore center Liz Hickey added 10 rebounds and 12 blocks.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tue., Nov. 29 when it opens its home and conference schedule against Bridgewater at 7:00 pm.
