W&L Women's Basketball Falls To Mary Washington, 60-53

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team fell to 1-1 on the season with a 60-53 loss to the University of Mary Washington in the championship game at the Swarthmore Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday afternoon in Swarthmore, Pa.

The Eagles (2-0) jumped out to a 9-3 lead at the 15:21 mark, but the Generals pulled to within one point at 14-13 on a pair of free throws by freshman guard Bethany Ridenhour (Westwood, N.J./Academy of the Holy Angels) with 9:58 left in the first half. However, UMW pushed its lead to as many as 12 points at 25-13 at 5:36 before going into halftime with a 30-21 advantage.

Following intermission, the Eagles extended their lead to 19 points at 46-27 with 10:43 remaining in the second half, but W&L responded with a 16-4 run over the next 4:38 to pull within seven points at 50-43. Freshman forward Kara Nadeau (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) cut the deficit to 50-46 with 4:43 left when she connected on a three-point play, but that would be as close as the Generals would come for the rest of the game.

W&L shot 37 percent (20-of-54) from the floor and pulled down 44 rebounds, while UMW shot 39 percent (25-of-64) and grabbed 36 boards.

Ridenhour finished with team-high 13 points and four rebounds, while senior guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) chipped in with 11 points and sophomore forward Kristen Krouchick (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy) tallied 10 points and seven boards. Junior center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./The Orme School), who was named to the all-tournament team, finished with six points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.

The Eagles were led by Debbie Bruen's 17 points, six rebounds, and game-high four steals. Liz Hickey chipped in with 13 points and two blocks.

W&L and Mary Washington will square off for the second time in three days on Tuesday night at Mary Washington. The game is set to begin at 6:00 pm.
