W&L Women’s Basketball Defeats Swarthmore, 67-60

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team won its first season-opener since the 1997-98 season with a 67-60 win over Swarthmore in the opening round of the Swarthmore Tipoff Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals (1-0) jumped out to a 12-0 lead and led 40-25 at the break. W&L pushed its' advantage to as many as 21 points (47-26) early in the second half before the Garnet would mount a late rally. Swarthmore sliced W&L's lead to just five points (64-59) with 40 seconds remaining, but could get no closer.

W&L offset 33 turnovers by shooting 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the floor and out-rebounding the Garnet by 12 boards (48-36).

Junior center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./Orme School) paced the Generals with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman forward Kara Nadeau (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) notched 12 points and six rebounds, while senior guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) added 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Swarthmore (0-1) was led by Karen Berk's 23 points and eight rebounds. Jennifer Stevenson chipped in with 14 points and six boards.

The Generals return to action on Sunday as they take on Mary Washington in the championship game which is slated to begin at 4:00 pm.
