LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee football team claimed its first seven-win season since 1985 by defeating Case Western Reserve, 34-10, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Spartans (3-7) opened the scoring with 10:19 remaining in the first quarter as sophomore quarterback Stephen Johnson (Junction City, Ore./Junction City) found junior wide receiver Joseph Brenner (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) for a 65-yard touchdown pass to give CRWU a 7-0 lead.
W&L (7-3) knotted the score at 7-7 on a 1-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Stuart Sitterson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) with 2:21 left in the first quarter. The Generals then took the lead with 13:14 left in the half on a 26-yard touchdown reception by junior wide receiver Colton Ward (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) from senior quarterback Greg Tweardy (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park). W&L then struck for another score just 3:59 later as Tweardy found sophomore wide receiver Jack Martin (Princeton, N.J./Hun School) for a 23-yard touchdown and a 21-7 lead.
The score remained unchanged until the Spartans closed to 21-10 on a 22-yard field goal by sophomore Brian Calderone (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview) with 7:40 left in the third period.
Martin scored his second touchdown of the day, this time on a 9-yard reception with 13:05 remaining in the game for a 27-10 lead. The PAT attempt failed, but the Generals would score again just 3:01 later as freshman defensive back Chris Prugar (Prospect, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) blocked a punt by Calderone which was recovered in the end zone by junior linebacker Chris Joseph (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) for a touchdown. The extra point by junior placekicker Ben Long (Frankford, W.Va./Hargrave Military) provided the final margin of 34-10.
Tweardy completed 16-of-23 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns, while Martin caught four passes for 65 yards and two scores. Ward snared two passes for 29 yards and one score, and rushed for 42 yards on eight carries. Sitterson amassed 141 all-purpose yards and one touchdown. Senior defensive lineman Zach Wall (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) led the W&L defense with 12 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Freshman linebacker Bradley McAllister (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) registered 11 stops, while senior linebacker Ryan Hoover (McLean, Va./McLean) totaled nine tackles and one interception.
Case Western Reserve was paced by Johnson, who completed 20-of-36 passes for 210 yards and one touchdown. Freshman running back Dan Van Dyke (Sandy Lake, Pa./Lakeview) rushed 14 times for 62 yards and Brenner caught two passes for 67 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore defensive back John Tiemeier (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) led the Spartans' defense with nine tackles and a forced fumble.
