W&L Men's Soccer Edges Guilford, 2-1, In Overtime

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior midfielder Rhett McCraw (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) scored an unassisted goal with 1:19 remaining in the first overtime period to give Washington and Lee a 2-1 win over Guilford in ODAC men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Watt Field.

Both defenses controlled the game for most of the first half until Quaker freshman forward Scott Meguid (Durham, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) scored on a free kick with just 2:21 left in the first half to give Guilford (4-5-1, 0-4) a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Generals (5-4-1, 3-1-1) finally got their offense going in the second half and tied the game at 1-1 when sophomore forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) scored off a feed from senior midfielder Brett Strohsacker (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) at the 80:28 mark, which set up McCraw's game-winner.

W&L outshot the Quakers, 18-7, and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Mike Stanton (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) played the opening 45 minutes for the Generals and made one save, while sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) made two saves in 53:41 minutes of action. Guilford junior netminder Zane Campbell (Frederick, Md./Frederick) played the entire game and stopped seven shots.

Washington and Lee returns to the field on Wednesday when it hosts Eastern Mennonite at 4:00 pm.
