W&L Volleyball Wins a Pair of Matches at Averett Invitational

DANVILLE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's volleyball team upped its record to 17-3 with a pair of wins on the final day of the Averett Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Danville, Va. The Generals defeated Greensboro, 30-26, 33-31, 23-30, 30-22 and Meredith, 30-11, 30-14, 30-21.

In the win over the Pride (15-4), the Generals were led by freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII), who tallied 19 kills. Junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) notched 26 digs and senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) totaled six blocks. Senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) notched 50 assists and two aces.

Against Meredith (6-8), freshman outside hitter Alex Scaggs (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) had 14 kills and Edmonson tallied 12 digs. Gladysz totaled 26 assists in just two games.

Gladsyz is now the Old Dominon Athletic Conference (ODAC) all-time leader in assists. She has 4,558 career assists, which broke the old record of 4,475 assists held by Roanoke's Holly Holland.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Lynchburg at 6:30 pm.
