DANVILLE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's volleyball team improved to 15-3 with a pair of wins on the first day of the Averett Invitational on Friday evening in Danville, Va. The Generals defeated Queens, 30-18, 30-20, 30-23 before knocking off the host Cougars, 30-26, 30-24, 30-23.
In the win over the Royals (0-18), the Generals were led by freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII), who tallied 13 kills. Freshman middle blocker Laurel Stewart (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) notched six kills, four aces and three blocks in only two games. Senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) added 35 assists and six digs. With the win, Head Coach Bryan Snyder picked up his 200th career victory.
Against Averett (14-6), Maurer and Stewart led the Generals with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) and junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) each had 12 digs, while Gladysz notched 41 assists and 11 digs.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday in the second day of the Averett Invitational. The Generals take on Greensboro at 10:00 am and Meredith at 12:00 pm.
