W&L Volleyball Splits on Day Two of the Centre Tournament

DANVILLE, Ky. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team saw its school record winning streak end at 21 matches after splitting in the second day of the Centre College Halloween Bash on Sunday morning. The Generals were defeated by Capital, 30-24, 21-30, 30-23, 30-26, before ending the tournament with a 22-30, 30-21, 30-23, 30-20 win over Centre.

In the loss to Capital, the Generals were led by freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), who posted 19 kills and seven digs. Senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) totaled 15 kills and five blocks, and freshman middle blocker Laurel Stewart (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) notched 14 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) amassed 12 kills and 15 digs, while senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) registered six kills and a career-high 27 digs. Senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) racked up 59 assists, 15 digs and six blocks.

In the victory over Centre, Gaillard totaled 20 kills, five blocks and five digs. Maurer tallied 15 kills, while Byrne posted 11 kills, 14 digs and five blocks. Junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) added a team-best 17 digs and Gladysz amassed 53 assists, nine digs, five blocks and four service aces.

Washington and Lee (29-4) will return to action on Friday in the opening round of the ODAC Tournament at Emory & Henry College. The Generals will be the tournament's top seed and will face eighth-seeded Guilford in the opener.
