DANVILLE, Ky. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team extended its school record winning streak to 21 victories in a row with a pair of wins on the opening day of the Centre College Halloween Bash on Saturday. W&L downed Oglethorpe, 30-9, 30-22, 30-12, then defeated Piedmont, 30-19, 30-21, 30-24.
In the win over Oglethorpe, the Generals were paced by freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), who tallied 12 kills in two games. Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) posted 11 kills in two games, while junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) notched 11 digs. Senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) added 45 assists and 12 digs.
In the win over Piedmont, senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) registered a team-best 13 kills and six blocks, while freshman middle blocker Laurel Stewart (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) added 11 kills and three blocks. Maurer posted 10 kills, and senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) recorded nine digs, eight kills and four blocks. Gladysz amassed 39 assists, 11 digs and five service aces.
The Generals (28-3) return to action in the second day of the Centre Halloween Bash on Sunday. W&L will play Capital at 9:00 am and Centre at 11:00 am.
