LEXINGTON, Va. -- The top-seeded Washington and Lee field hockey team advanced to the ODAC Tournament semifinals with a 4-1 win over eighth-seeded Sweet Briar in the ODAC quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (13-5) dented the scoreboard at the 21:07 mark when senior forward Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Kay Dyt (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes). W&L took a 2-0 lead into halftime after freshman midfielder Christina Merchant (Midlothian, Va./Collegiate) notched an unassisted tally at 28:20.
In the second half, junior forward Amy Volkmann (Norfolk, Va./Granby) made it 3-0 at 38:10 with a goal off an assist from senior midfielder Kate Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends). The Vixens (4-14) closed to within 3-1 at the 47:49 mark on an unassisted tally by senior forward Paula Kirkland (Glen Allen, Va./St. Gertrudes), but the Generals capped the scoring just 35 seconds later on a goal off a penalty corner by senior midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate). Sophomore midfielder Kendall Korte (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) tallied the assist.
W&L senior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) played the opening 35 minutes, while classmate Elise Gelinas (Gladwyne, Pa./Agnes Irwin) was between the posts for the next 30 minutes. Freshman Tara Rubenstein (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) played the final five minutes and made one save. Senior netminder Jenn Wiley (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) played the entire game and stopped 25 shots for the Vixens.
Washington and Lee will play fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon in the ODAC semifinals on Fri., Nov. 4 at the W&L Turf Field. The time of the game is still to be determined.
