LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team claimed the championship of the Generals Classic with a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon. The Generals defeated Elizabethtown, 30-19, 30-26, 30-25, then defeated Roanoke, 30-15, 30-21, 30-22 to finish the tournament 4-0 overall and up their win streak to 18 straight.
W&L (25-3) senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) was named the tournament MVP, while junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) were also named to the all-tournament team.
In the win over Elizabethtown (17-10), W&L was paced by Gaillard's 13-kill, eight-block, seven-dig performance. Freshman outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) notched 10 kills and 13 digs, while senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) posted nine kills and 12 digs. Edmonson added a team-best 19 digs, while Gladysz registered 39 assists, 11 digs and five blocks.
In the victory over Roanoke (13-13), sophomore outside hitter Jessica Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) recorded a team-high 12 kills and seven digs. Maurer again notched 10 kills and eight digs, while Edmonson posted 13 digs. Gladysz added 49 assists and three service aces to set a new W&L career aces record (236), breaking the record of 235 formerly held by Stacey Kimmel '03.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Sweet Briar for a 6:30 pm contest.
