W&L Women's Soccer Defeats St. Mary's (Md.), 4-1

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) scored a goal and added an assist to help lead the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 4-1 win over St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (12-1-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 9:12 gone-by when freshman forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) scored off an assist from freshman defender Marisa Van Brunt (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville).

The score remained 1-0 until Kern tallied an unassisted goal just 4:02 into the second half to make it 2-0. W&L extended its advantage to 3-0 at 53:23 when Kern fed junior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), who put her shot into the back of the Seahawks' net.

W&L junior midfielder Jamie Dorsey (Cockeysville, Md./McDonogh School) made it 4-0 on an unassisted tally at 82:10. Just 23 seconds later, St. Mary's got on the scoreboard on an unassisted goal by freshman forward Sarah Grady (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) to make the final score 4-1.

The Generals held a 13-11 edge in shots and a 13-7 advantage in corner kicks.

W&L freshman goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) made four saves, while freshman netminder Marie Oben (Glenn Dale, Md./St. Mary's Annapolis) also stopped four shots for the Seahawks.

Washington and Lee closes out the regular season on Tuesday when it travels to Eastern Mennonite for a 4:00 pm contest.
