W&L Field Hockey Defeated by Christopher Newport, 4-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Sophomore forward Ashley Traylor scored two goals to help lead the Christopher Newport field hockey team to 4-1 win over Washington and Lee on Sunday afternoon in Newport News, Va.

The Generals (4-5) took a 1-0 lead just 4:40 into the game when sophomore forward Maggie Nugent (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) scored off a pass from senior forward Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River). The Captains (6-3) tied the game at 1-1 after Traylor scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Kelly Jo Broadhurst at the 24:28 mark.

Christopher Newport pushed its lead to 2-1 just 3:43 later on a goal by freshman forward Annie Gehring off an assist from freshman midfielder Lyndsay Kelly. The Captains headed into halftime with a 3-1 advantage when sophomore defender Jacque Mayer scored on a penalty shot at 31:51.

Traylor ended the scoring with her second goal of the game off an assist from sophomore midfielder Rhiannon Thomasson at the 67:22 mark.

Christopher Newport outshot W&L, 15-12, but the Generals held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.

W&L senior goalkeepers Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Gladwyne, Pa./Agnes Irwin) combined to make five saves. Sophomore Hannah Brown stopped five shots for the Captains.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Roanoke at 6:00 pm.
