LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee freshman forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) scored an unassisted goal just 29 seconds into the second overtime in lifting the Generals to a 1-0 double-overtime win over Lynchburg in ODAC women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (11-1-2, 9-0-1) had several opportunities to dent the scoring column throughout the game, but could not slip a shot past Hornet senior goalkeeper Katie DeLorenzo (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Morris Catholic) until Van Devender's game-winner. DeLorenzo made seven saves in the contest, including a diving save on an angled shot by W&L junior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) during the first overtime session.
Lynchburg (12-2-2, 8-1) also had a great scoring opportunity during regulation, but junior midfielder Melanie Chidester's (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) shot sailed just wide of a wide-open goal late in the second period.
W&L held a 14-7 advantage in shots and posted a 12-3 margin in corner kicks. Freshman netminder Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) notched two saves in helping the Generals to their 10th shutout of the season, just one shy of tying the school record.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts St. Mary's (Md.) for a 2:00 pm contest.
