W&L Field Hockey Defeats Eastern Mennonite, 2-1

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee won its school-record seventh ODAC game and school-record 11th overall game with a 2-1 victory over Eastern Mennonite in ODAC field hockey action on Wednesday evening at the W&L Turf Field.

The Generals (11-5, 7-1) took a 1-0 lead just 3:18 into the game when senior midfielder Kate Lester (Wilmington, Del./Friends) scored on a penalty shot. W&L extended its lead to 2-0 at 25:52 after junior forward Amy Volkmann (Norfolk, Va./Granby) tallied a goal off an assist from freshman forward Alden Wicker (Edgewater, Md./South River). The Royals (9-5, 4-3) cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into halftime on an unassisted goal by freshman forward Maria Bowman (Bally, Pa./Boyertown) at 29:02.

In the second half, EMU had a number of scoring chances to tie the game, but W&L senior goalkeeper Elise Gelinas (Gladwyne, Pa./Agnes Irwin) made three huge saves in the last few minutes to preserve the 2-1 win.

W&L outshot the Royals, 11-8, and held a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Senior goalkeeper Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) played the opening 35 minutes and made one save, while Gelinas was in goal for the final 35 minutes and finished with the three saves. Senior netminder Christina Bender (Belleville, Pa./Belleville Mennonite) played all 70 minutes and stopped five shots for the Royals.
