W&L Men's Soccer Defeats Roanoke, 2-1, In Double Overtime

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior midfielder Kyle Garcia (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) scored off an assist from junior defender Scot Pittman (Waxhaw, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) with just 2:58 remaining in the second overtime period to give Washington and Lee a 2-1 victory over Roanoke in ODAC men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.

After a scoreless first half, Garcia gave the Generals (7-4-2, 4-1-2) a 1-0 lead when he scored off a feed from sophomore forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) at 47:30. The Maroons (7-5, 5-2) tied the game at 1-1 after sophomore midfielder Eric Eversole (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) scored off a throw in that was misplayed by W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) at the 57:29 mark.

Both offenses were held in check for the rest of the second half and through the first overtime period, but the Generals only needed one shot in the second extra period. In the second stanza, Garcia took a long pass from Pittman and after beating a Roanoke defender and pulling sophomore netminder Austin Rose (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) out of the goal, Garcia fired his shot into the empty net to give W&L the win.

The Generals outshot the Maroons, 12-11, and held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Sheedy finished with five saves, while Rose stopped six shots.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Virginia Wesleyan for a 4:30 pm game.
