SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- Junior forward Amy Volkmann (Norfolk, Va./Granby) notched a goal and an assist to help lead Washington and Lee to a 3-0 victory over Sweet Briar in ODAC field hockey action on Thursday afternoon in Sweet Briar, Va.
The Generals (7-5, 5-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 24:25 mark when senior forward Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) scored off a feed from Volkmann. The score remained 1-0 until freshman forward Alden Wicker (Edgewater, Md./South River) notched an unassisted tally with just 26 seconds left in the first half to give W&L a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Volkmann ended the scoring with a goal off an assist from sophomore midfieder Kay Dyt (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) at 67:58.
W&L outshot Sweet Briar, 26-1, and held a 15-1 edge in penalty corners.
W&L senior goalkeepers Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Gladwyne, Pa./Agnes Irwin) each played 35 minutes, while senior netminder Jenn Wiley played all 70 minutes and stopped 17 shots for the Vixens (2-9, 0-6).
Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday at Randolph-Macon Woman's College for a 4:00 pm contest.
