VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Junior forward Megan May scored two goals to help lead Virginia Wesleyan to a 3-1 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC field hockey action on Saturday afternoon in Virginia Beach, Va.
May gave the Marlins (7-2, 4-0) a 1-0 lead at the 19:39 mark when she scored off an assist from junior forward Chrissy Clancy. The Generals (4-4, 3-1) knotted the game at 1-1 at 23:59 on an unassisted goal by junior forward Amy Volkmann (Norfolk, Va./Granby). The score remained tied at 1-1 heading into halftime.
May again scored off a feed from Clancy at 41:35 to give Virginia Wesleyan a 2-1 advantage, which it wouldn't relinquish. The Marlins ended the scoring when sophomore forward Katie Melzac found the back of the Generals' net at 50:49. Freshman forward KC Marchwicki tallied the assist.
W&L senior goalkeepers Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Elise Gelinas (Gladwyne, Pa./Agnes Irwin) each played 35 minutes and combined to make three saves. Sophomore netminder Megan Koster stopped five shots for the Marlins.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday at Christopher Newport. The game begins at 1:00 pm.
