NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team placed third out of eight teams at the Apprentice School Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va.
UNC-Pembroke took home the team title with 97.0 points, followed by Apprentice (72.5), Washington and Lee (52.0), Newberry College (48.5), University of Maryland-Baltimore County (48.0), Southern Virginia (11.0), Virginia Commonwealth (4.0), and Clemson (3.0).
The Generals were led by the freshmen trio of Jesup Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh), Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) and Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers).
Sataloff, the number one seed in the 174-pound weight class, went 3-0 to win the title. He pinned Brian Wallace of Clemson in 4:29, defeated Justin Gilliard of Apprentice, 6-2, and knocked off second-seeded Eric Lybarger of Apprenctice 14-2 in the championship match.
Lawrence, the top seed at 149 pounds, finished second. He pinned Joseph Kervin of Newberry in 2:40, before falling to second-seeded Andrew Steed of UNC-Pembroke 17-9 in the championship match.
Boniello went 3-1 and placed third in 157-pound weight class. He pinned second seeded Ryan Green of Maryland-BC in 2:06, lost to Reuben Russell of Apprentice, 12-6, then pinned Donnie Strickland of VCU in 5:15 before defeated Raymond Wright of UNC-Pembroke, 8-1, in the third place match.
The Generals return to the mat on Saturday when they host the W&L Quadrangular. The meet begins at 11:00 am.
