LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman forward Josh LaPorte (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) notched career-highs in points (14), rebounds (16) and steals (5) to lift Roanoke to a 64-60 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's basketball action on Saturday evening at the Warner Center.
The Maroons (11-8, 5-7) held a slim 31-29 lead at the break, but the Generals hit each of their first seven shots from the field in the second half to open a 44-40 lead with 13:56 left to play. The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth until Roanoke took the lead for good at 58-57 on a layup by senior center Kevinn Hunter (Dale City, Va./Gar-Field) with 3:45 remaining.
W&L sliced the lead to 61-60 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fa./Ridgewood) with 2:49 left and RC freshman guard Ben Shrader (Tazewell, Va./Mercer Christian) made it 62-60 with a free throw at the 2:00 mark. The Generals had a chance to tie with four seconds remaining, but freshman guard John Mumper's (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) layup attempt was short and LaPorte snatched the rebound and was fouled. He hit both free throws to clinch the victory.
W&L (2-18, 0-13) was paced by senior guard Mike Stuart (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier), who scored 11 points. Halkitis and junior forward David Will (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) both tallied 10 points and five rebounds.
Hunter notched 19 points and eight rebounds for Roanoke. He and LaPorte were joined in double-figures by Shrader, who tallied 13 points.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Hampden-Sydney for a 2:00 pm contest.
