EMORY, Va. -- Emory & Henry junior guard Brooke Barker hit a three-pointer with 9.9 seconds remaining to lift the Wasps to a 69-66 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Tuesday evening.
The Generals (10-8, 6-7) had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but senior guard Bethany Dannelly's (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) three-pointer rimmed out.
W&L jumped out to a 30-16 lead with 6:09 remaining in the first half, but the Wasps (11-6, 8-4) closed the half on a 13-4 run to cut the advantage to 34-29 at the break. The Generals pushed back to a 42-35 lead at the 16:40 mark, but a 13-2 run gave the Wasps a 48-44 lead with 10 minutes left in the game. The Generals never assumed the lead again, but tied the game on several occasions, including at 66-66 on a three-pointer by junior guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Chuchill) with 1:29 remaining.
The Wasps outscored the Generals 21-5 at the free throw line and had 26 offensive rebounds.
W&L was led by sophomore center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./Orme School), who tallied a game-high 23 points and 15 rebounds. Freshman forward Amanda Kane (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) scored a career-high 16 points, while Feve and freshman forward Kristen Krouchick (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy) added 11 points each. Dannelly tied a season-high with nine assists and had two steals to set a new W&L career steals record. She now has 178 steals breaking the record of 177 formerly held by Ansley Miller '00.
Emory & Henry was led by Barker, who scored 16 points. Junior guard Kate Childress totaled 15 points, while senior guard Amy Hensley chipped in 10 points.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Roanoke for a 4:00 pm contest.
