LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./The Orme School) and junior guard Louisa Feve (Bethesda, Md./Winston Churchill) each recorded a double-double to help lead the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 71-55 victory over Southern Virginia on Friday night at the Warner Center. Hunsinger scored 17 points and pulled down a season-high 17 rebounds, while Feve had 16 points and a season-high 10 boards.
After missing their first eight shots, the Generals (10-7) only trailed 7-5 with 12:38 remaining in the first half. However, W&L then went on a 26-6 run to take a 31-13 lead with 4:16 left in the half. The Knights (5-13) responded by closing out the half on an 11-0 spurt and went into the break down just 31-24.
Southern Virginia then opened up the second half on 11-4 run to knot the score at 35-35 with 16:24 remaining in the game. W&L retook the lead at 37-35 on a pair of free throws by Feve and methodically pushed its advantage back to double figures at 54-44 with 8:10 remaining. From there, the Generals wouldn't surrender their double-digit advantage.
W&L forced Southern Virginia into 28 turnovers and held a 51-43 advantage on the boards.
The Generals received a game-high 19 points from freshman forward Kristen Krouchick (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy), while freshman forward Amanda Kane (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson Secondary) added six points, eight rebounds, and a game-high five steals.
Southern Virginia was led by freshman center Chelsea Lund (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McCluer), who scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Kim Anderson (Orem, Utah/Mountain View) also notched 13 points and had a team-best six assists.
With the win, W&L eclipsed last season's win total. The Generals return to action on Tuesday at Emory & Henry. The game begins at 7:00 pm.
