LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five games with a 2-0 victory over the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (3-2-2) struck first when senior midfielder Brian Pirkle (Lexington, Va./Woodberry Forest) received a pass from senior midfielder Justin Mygatt (Marietta, Ga./Woodward Academy) and fired it into the back of the Eagles' net at the 24:32 mark. W&L's defense held Mary Washington (5-5) without a shot in the first half and went into the locker room with the 1-0 lead.
Freshman forward Travis Short (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) scored the Generals' second goal at 64:22 off a pass from senior defender Peter Miller (Towson, Md./Baltimore Lutheran).
The Eagles rebounded from their slow start to get off seven shots in the second half but Generals freshman goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) made three saves to pick up his second win of the year.
Sophomore Peter Clark (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) stopped three shots for Mary Washington.
Washington and Lee returns to the field on Saturday when it hosts ODAC-rival Randolph-Macon. The game is slated to begin at 11:00 am.
